Refugees suffering at Moria concentration camp, Lesvos, 2018

The word Moria brings to mind the abominable underground Mines of Moria: Gandalf, Frodo and their friends had to go through the terrible Moria in order to fulfill their quest.

Unlike Tolkien's fairy-tales, there is a real Moria and real suffering in the otherwise idyllic Greek island of Lesvos. Refugees coming from nearby Turkey, risking their lives at sea, looking for a better future in Europe or simply trying to escape war and destruction, accumulate in Moria. 7000 refugees are currently within a camp designed to accommodate up to 2000. A recent article in the Guardian highlights the humanitarian crisis threatening to unfold there in the harsh winter conditions.

I am writing this as it may be a New Year resolution for many of us to offer aid at Lesvos this year, particularly during the summer, after our graduation. Read the Guardian article at https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/dec/22/this-isnt-europe-life-greece-worst-refugee-camps and see available volunteer organizations on site at: http://www.greekislandvolunteers.com/lesvos-1.html
